The Solstice Series outdoor education mini-conference was a hit! Helping educators think about the challenges and opportunities that outdoor education brings, and giving plenty of resources to get students outside!
If you missed it, here are some of my highlights: 1. Think GRABBSS when you are planning an activity Paul Kelba (@pualkelba) led a group of us through some debriefing techniques. The GRABBSS acronym can help you get the most out of an activity (and thus debrief). Standing for; goals, readiness, affect, behaviour, body, stage, and setting - you can easily run this through your head to ensure you have chosen an effective activity for your group learning. What is your goal for this activity? Are the students ready to enter the task? are they ready to achieve or fail at the task? Affect on individual, the specific group? how will this influence the future? What is the bahaviour of the students now? is it in line with what you want for the activity? How will pear, apple, or stick shaped bodies influence the interactions? Stage includes how this activity is viewed by others, not just those in the group. and finally the setting is wear the task or activity will take place. 2. You will put your life in others hands... and we don't even have to leave the classroom! Trusting others with your life? In your own classroom? Experiential educators sometimes need a reminder that some of the best facilities we have are our classrooms. If you are aware of Bruce Tuckman's stages of group development - Forming, storming, norming, and performing - you know that some of the most important times with your group of students are in the first few meetings. Why not start to build relationships built on trust right away? This can be done in your room/hallway with trust activities! Trust activities range in comfort, risk, and entrance abilities, Use GRABBSS to help ensure your activities are appropriate for your group. For Calgary area educators this was a great chance to meet like minded people and develop professionally. If you missed it there will be some more PD opportunities coming up!
